Course Request Course Backup Course Restore

WebCT Course Restore

There are 2 options:

  1. Create a designer backup of a course currently on the WebCT server and restore the designer backup to the newly created course shell.

  2. Upload a designer backup that has been downloaded to a removable media and restore the designer backup to the newly created course shell..


1.  Create and restore a designer backup  

  • Log on to WebCT.
  • Click the Course functions button located at the top of the myWebCT screen.
  • Select each course you want to backup by clicking in the checkbox to the left of the course title.
    Note: You can create more than one course backup at a time.
  • Under Options in the Action menu on the right hand side of the screen, click Create backups.
  • For each course backup, enter a short description.  This can include the course title and semester in which it was taught.
  • Click Create. The course backups are created and automatically saved as a zip file. The filename format is CourseID_MonthDay_Time.zip (e.g. EGG111300054_Jul19_1618.zip).
  • Click Continue
  • Select the backup created using the steps above by clicking in the checkbox to the left of the backup filename.
  • Under Options in the Action menu on the right hand side of the screen, click Restore backup.
  • Select the course in which the backup should be restored by clicking in the checkbox to the left of the course title.
    Important: The selected courses will be overwritten by the backup.  Please use a new course shell to create a new course.
  • Choose the appropriate button under span style="font-family: Arial"> Options in the Action menu on the right hand side of the screen.  (Reset course will copy over all of the course content from the backup, creating a new course without previous user data.  Replace users will copy the user data from the backup course to the new course shell.  This allows you to review previous user data stored in your backup.  Contact the DE office to request a new course shell to view data from a course backup.)   
  • Click OK.
  • Click Continue.


2.  Upload and restore a designer backup

  • Log on to WebCT.
  • Click the Course functions button located at the top of the myWebCT screen.
  • Select the course in which the backup should be uploaded by clicking in the checkbox to the left of the course title.
  • Under Options in the Action menu on the right hand side of the screen, click Upload backup.
    Note: You can upload only one course backup at a time.
  • Click the Browse button located to the right of the Filename text box.
  • Locate and select the file you want to upload.
  • Click Upload.
    Note: The time required to upload a course backup depends on the file size and on the speed of the server.
  • Click Continue.
  • Select the backup uploaded using the steps above by clicking in the checkbox to the left of the backup filename.
  • Under Options in the Action menu on the right hand side of the screen, click Restore backup.
  • SSelect the course in which the backup should be restored by clicking in the checkbox to the left of the course title.
    Important: The selected courses will be overwritten by the backup.
  • Under span style="font-family: Arial"> Options in the Action menu on the right hand side of the screen, click Reset course.  This option will copy over all of the course content from the backup, but ensures that any users or user-generated content is not restored to the new course.
  • Click OK.
  • Click Continue.
